GSTIN validator
Catch typing mistakes in a GST number before they reach an invoice or a return. See the state, PAN, holder type and whether the check digit is right – for one GSTIN or a whole list.
Type or paste a GSTIN to check it.
This checks the format only. A GSTIN can have a correct format and check digit and still be fake, cancelled or belong to someone else. Before you claim input tax credit or accept a big order, confirm the name and status on the GST portal.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us or stored on our server.
How to use the GSTIN validator
- Type or paste a GSTIN. The check runs as you type.
- See each part explained: state code, PAN, PAN holder type, registration number and check digit.
- To check many, choose Many GSTINs, paste the list and click Check all.
- Download the result as CSV, or copy it into Excel.
- For any supplier you rely on for input tax credit, also confirm the GSTIN on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer.
How is a GSTIN made up?
A GSTIN has 15 characters. The first 2 digits are the state code. The next 10 are the PAN of the business. The 13th character counts registrations under the same PAN in that state (1 for the first). The 14th is Z by default, and the 15th is a check character calculated from the other 14.
What does the check digit catch?
The last character is calculated from the first 14, so most single typing mistakes and swapped neighbouring characters make it wrong. A wrong check digit means the GSTIN was copied incorrectly.
What this check cannot tell you
It cannot tell whether the GSTIN was actually issued, is active or cancelled, or whose it is. Only the GST portal can. Use Search Taxpayer on gst.gov.in to see the legal name, status and filing record.
Questions people ask
Is a GSTIN with a valid format genuine?
Not necessarily. Anyone can make up a number that passes the format check. Always confirm the name and status on the GST portal before claiming input tax credit.
What does the 4th letter of the PAN mean?
It shows the type of holder: P for an individual, C company, F firm or LLP, H HUF, A association of persons, T trust, B body of individuals, L local authority, J artificial juridical person and G government.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to us or to the GST portal.
Why does it say special registration?
Some registrations, such as TDS or TCS deductors, UN bodies, non-resident taxpayers and online service providers from abroad, use a different pattern in place of the PAN. The check digit is still checked.
