How to use the Rent receipt generator
- Enter the tenant name, landlord name and landlord PAN, and the address of the rented home.
- Enter the monthly rent and choose the first and last month.
- Choose the payment mode and whether each receipt is dated on the first or last day of the month.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. Each month prints on its own page. Get each receipt signed by the landlord.
Why do employees need rent receipts?
To claim the HRA (house rent allowance) exemption, employers ask for proof that rent was actually paid, usually rent receipts and in some cases the rent agreement. HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime.
When is the landlord's PAN needed?
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 in a financial year, your employer needs the landlord's PAN to allow the HRA exemption. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration from the landlord is usually asked for instead.
Revenue stamp on rent receipts
When rent above ₹5,000 is paid in cash, the receipt should carry a ₹1 revenue stamp signed across by the landlord. The generator adds a box for it automatically. For rent paid by bank transfer or UPI, the bank record is itself proof of payment.
Questions people ask
Is a rent receipt valid without the landlord's signature?
Employers expect it to be signed by the landlord. Print the receipts and get them signed, or add a signature image the landlord has given you.
Can I make receipts for the whole financial year at once?
Yes. Choose April as the first month and March as the last, and you get 12 receipts, one per page.
Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
Rent paid to parents who own the house can be claimed if it is actually paid and the parents show it as rental income. Rent paid to your spouse is generally not accepted. Keep bank proof of the payments.
Is anything I type saved online?
No. Everything stays in your browser. The names and amounts are remembered on this device so you can make next year's receipts quickly.
